SDJ was contracted by its client to take existing intellectual property and redesign it to suit their client’s needs. The project involved redesigning and supplying two fibre optic winding machines from first principles.
This was the first opportunity to demonstrate SDJ’s capability to design complex equipment with the constant tension fibre optic winch being the key feature to the machines operation. The winch operating in constant tension mode with a maximum fibre tension of 196N required an innovative design. A successful solution was achieved and after commissioning the client was delighted to take delivery of two complete machines.
As part of the project two sheaves were also delivered. The sheaves were fabricated and then fitted with a nylon insert to protect the umbilical. Fabricating the sheave and using a nylon insert to form the sheave groove, allowed a significant weight and cost saving for the client.
